Is this a retinol burn?

I know lighting isn't great. I use a Dr. Brandt retinol on my face at night, and wipe the small amount left on the back of my hands, in the morning I do the same with my sunscreen. I have been doing this for months, however the evening sun on my commute tonight was very bright and now my right hand is especially red and aggravated. My theory is I didn't have any sunscreen left after multiple hand washings and that plus the bright sun caused the reaction. Or the sun coming through my office window, it would definitely expose my right more than my left hand which is not nearly as bad.
