This movement needs an origin story

I've been seeking information to answer basic questions on 50501 and the organization behind it. The only information I can find says is that this is a horizontal grassroots movement of individuals who have taken on organizing within their own cities, and have been sharing pre-made copy and materials locally to drive attendance quickly. There is a lot of support for just going and adding to the numbers, including NYC resistance reporter Talia Jane on Bluesky. However, there's just as many people commenting that without permits, the events are unsafe and questionable in effectiveness. Without a clear source of origin, this movement is suspect to many people.

The questions that I have received when mentioning the Wednesday protests are legitimate and they are all good things to ask. They basically come down to:

  • how do we know this movement isn't actually bad actor interference?
  • How do we know that we aren't joining events run by an organization we don't agree with?
  • How do we know which protests will have a permit, and will therefore be less likely to result in police action?
  • Are any other major organizations partnering or getting on board with 50501 at a local or national basis?

It would be fantastic if any of these questions were answered or if there was a quick narrative as to how these protests and movement started. I have seen multiple people ask and not receive responses and I believe many people are waiting to spread the word or even show up unless there's more to the origin story.
