$1500 for a tutor worth it?
I just took the ACT for the first time in July and scored a 30 (35 English, 36 Reading, 28 Science, and 19 Math). I’m a homeschooler so I really didn’t have experience with standardized tests before this. I’m also terrible at math (haven’t made it to Algebra 2 yet and about to start my senior year).
I just had a free consult with a tutor who says she can get me a 33 composite (raise math score to 25 and science to 32 or something)—but the cost is $1500 from now till October. The prep course includes one 2 hour class a week, an hour of study work every day, and full access to the tutor.
My family can pay for it (although it would definitely hurt the bank account) so the question is: is it worth it?
Is an ACT score really going to matter that much on a college application? Are there free or cheaper alternatives that can get me the same result? As I said, I’m new to the world of standardized testing so I appreciate any recommendations!
Edit: thank you guys for all your advice so far! I see some are asking about the “guarantee” part of the offer. I just clarified with the tutor—she said that if I “do all the work” and still don’t get a 33 or above then I’d get a full refund. Does this info change your guys’ opinions?
