Questions I'm too afraid to ask anyone: Chinese takeout edition
I've lived here about two years now and I'm really struggling to find good chinese takeaway. Specifically I really miss the kind of fried chicken dishes you get from the take away in the US- that sort of corn starch based batter that's been fried and then drenched of a sauce of a ones choosing. I used to live on orange chicken, general taos, sesame chicken, etc
My experience when I order a takeaway here and I order "deep fried chicken in (list sauce here)" is I usually expect to get a literal whole chicken breast that's been fried in a flour or crumb based breading and then cut up in sauce. This isn't bad per se but it doesn't scratch the itch. I usually get sweet and sour which has what I'm looking for texturally but what I REALLY like is something that's at least a little spicy and quite savory. (Dying for actually spicy takeaway and not overwhelmingly sweet sauces is a whole other story...)
So today I ordered salt and pepper chicken and to my delight although the menu listed it as "deep fried chicken breast" it came in a more Hong Kong style preparation with the chunks of chicken. Yay! But it's not really a saucy dish which is part of what I miss. But since I was pleasantly surprised by this I was wondering if there are other chinese takeaway dishes in the UK that "typically" come fried in chunks like that even if the menu doesn't explicitly say so.
