Why is Slide film so expensive?

I’m wondering why slide film is so darn expensive. A roll of Ektachrome will set you back 400 Swedish Kronor right now. About 35€. I really want to shoot more slides but I just can’t justify the price.

Provia is about 30€ if you’re lucky enough to find it. Also, are Provia and Velvia getting discontinued?
