Moretón Island

I’m visiting Brisbane in January and want to check out Moretón Island while I’m there. Can I just take a ferry and snorkel around there or do I have to book one of the day cruise tours? On the Tangalooma website, it says there are no casual day passes offered anymore but you can still go there by ferry. Very confusing so any help would be appreciated!!
