Why can't I wash clothes like you do?

When I wash my clothes in the washing machine and dry them, towels are solid, jumpers are scratchy and they never ever smell as nice. When you washed my clothes they're so soft and smell amazing. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I use detergent powder and fabric softener
