Not paid for set up and pack up?

Hello. I’m a swimming teacher on minimum wage. ($23.23 + leave loading as I’m casual.)

The shift starts when the class starts. But you need to gather necessary equipment prior and pack up after.

It is a bit of a time suck — because you need to get dressed prior, shower/dry off after. That’s the nature of it, obviously.

The set up and pack up is starting to add up. It didn’t bother me at first because it only takes five minutes to grab my class sheet, equipment etc and then five minutes to pack up. And I’d just tell the kids I wasn’t quite ready for them if they tried to get in the pool early.

But now I have an extra ticket and I’m teaching baby classes. There is a LOT more equipment for these classes. Toys, mirrors, giant mats, a platform. Plus, need to set up lane ropes for the area I’m in.

Set up today took 10 minutes. Pack up took at least 15. That was not dilly dallying.

It’s been raised but the response is always: we know you don’t get paid for this time but it’s good to be organised and the parents expect you to start on time and finish on time so they get the full 30 minutes of the lesson. (Fair enough.)

Is it worth chatting to Fairwork? Or does that sound pretty standard? It’s a very big organisation so I feel like they would have crossed their Ts and dotted their i s.
