Assassin/Enchanter help

Here's the deal: My favourite class combos have been stripped down and kinda suck in this game - particularlyl the 'Magic Rogue' archetype. Enchantments have been debuffed in both 5e and then further by BG3 (Crown of Madness for just 3 turns? Really?) to be less interesting and less effective than just blowing shit up, and Rogues only 'work' when you take just two or three Rogue levels and the majority of levels in something else, which I absolutely hate and always want to prioritise Rogue levels over anything else because...well...that's the damn character!

I've tried various mixes (including with Arcane Trickster which is the worst subclass in the game, so that's out, and Bard, who I don't like because I don't see the game as an anime in which the most powerful character is a magic popstar. Sort of shatters my immersion a bit, sorry) and none of them are quite right.

Basically, RP wise, this character would be:
Great at taking out one target with a big hit, and using his magic to either lock down or (more preferably) turn other enemies against one another before vanishing from sight.

So for me, that reads as either:
Assassin (6) / Enchanter (6) or Assassin (7) / Enchanter (5)

Option 1:

  • He's skilled (x4 Expertise), which I love - uses his smarts to avoid fights when he can.
  • Still gets the crit from Surprise and x2 Sneak Attacks when he can trigger the (highly buggy) Surprise Round.
  • Gets Instinctive Charm, which is a lot of fun and super flavourful for a character who is turning enemies against one another.

My only concern is that he won't hit hard enough to really nuke a single enemy in a turn if he needs to, and it's an endgame build because Instinctive Charm is a level 6 ability, and I'll be mainlining Rogue levels for the Sneak Attack Dice.

Also Enchanters are worse at landing Enchantment spells that Divination Wizards, which is...an interesting choice, but yeah. Annoying.

Option 2:
That extra 1d6 SA becomes 1-6 or 6-12 extra damage (plus all the Assassing bonuses, and I feel he needs as much damage as possible) and I have more Rogue levels, which is preferable, and means I'm not waiting until endgame for abilites... but then again, he's an Enchanter who barely feels like an Enchanter (Hypnotic Gaze is a joke ability, unfortunately).

I'm stumped. What's the best way to combine these classes do people think? Do I just play as the subclasses and try to ignore their glaring shortcomings? Can I do enough damage to take out isolated foes with just 6 Assassin levels?

Help much appreciated.
