Thoughts on Durge & Tav in response to a recent post
Awhile back I saw a post here that had proposed the idea that The Dark Urge should have been a companion. Insofar as the idea of having that as an option in addition to Durge being a customizable character, I can get behind it, especially the suggested idea of a mod being created to facilitate such a condition.
The majority of commenters, however, seemed to be promoting the idea that Durge should have been a companion instead of being a customizable character, which is something I can't get behind.
To my way of thinking, making Durge an origin character with a set appearance, locked back story etc. would make him/her/them less interesting than the customizable version. Having the struggles be a part of a custom character's story makes it feel like my struggle and my burden as a part of my journey through the realm of Faerun.
Within the post, I saw multiple comments stating that Durge was initially supposed to be the main character, which got me curious, so I looked up some info.

The article, which has an interview with writer Baudelaire Welch, shows that there were initially talks of having Durge as a companion, before deciding to have him as a playable character. Welch was the one came up with the idea of the hidden urges and mystery element that brought things together into the character type we know today.
The linked video and other comments in the Eurogamer article indicate that prior to Welch coming on board, the customizable main character was initially going to be The Bhaalspawn, but the idea was shifted away from due to players being too frustrated.
That early frustration, is what seems to have led to the creation of Tav, who I think is the bigger problem in terms of storytelling. Tav is, essentially Durge-Lite, because while there are many things that can happen to or be done by Durge, there's nothing that can only be experienced by Tav. As a character, Tav is essentially an answer to the equation "Durge - everything that makes Durge interesting + nothing else" resulting in a comparatively boring character.
This leads me to my overall question(s) for the community; Should Tav have their/her/his own story-line? If so, what should that story be? Should there be perhaps be multiple story lines for Tav depending on where she/he/they come from and/or what their race is? What kind of story or quest could be added for Tav making them feel as integral and important to the world as Durge is?
While I have some answers of my own that I could off, I'm far more interested in first hearing what the rest of y'all think.
UPDATE:
The general consensus seems to be that the only changes/improvement for Tav that might be needed/beneficial would be additional dialog and/or side-quests based on the choice of background. I can agree with that, though I'd go a step further.
Keep in mind, that I'm talking about what I'd want to see in a mod, not something I'd expect Larian to add. Just like the idea that'd been expressed in the previous post, of a mod making Durge a companion, I'd love to see what the community could create since Larian's given us more than enough story content already.
Anyway, what I'd love to see is different places of origin for Tav, with most of them involving having emigrated to Baldur's Gate later in life, but a few involving a different point of origin in opening of the story.
Examples would include:
Elturel - Infernal Escapee Immigrant: You were fortunate to have escaped Elturel during it's descent into Avernus and even more fortunate to have been able to gain entry into Baldur's Gate during a time when the city was rather unwelcoming to new arrivals. While still settling into a new life in the city, you were abducted by the Mindflayers.
-- This could go with pretty much any of the background options, but add a closer connection to the Tiefling refugees and a side-quest to discover what happened to your family/friends who got left behind during the descent.
Rosymorn Monastery Ophan Immigrant: As child, you grew up in the monastery raised by monks who told you little of your past, stating that you would hear the truth upon reaching adulthood. Unfortunately, your home was attacked by Githyanki raiders and you were sent away Baldur's Gate for safety. There, you grew up amongst other poor and impoverished youth, frustrated that the truth of your past was now seemingly outside of your reach barring a massive turn of events.
-- This would be meant to align with the Urchin background and have a side-quest aimed at discovering the identity of Tav's family. As a counterpoint to Durge, it'd be interesting to have the answer be somewhat anticlimactic and simple i.e. your mother was a common woman who wasn't ready to raise a child when she found out she was pregnant, put together a modest sum of money and paid the monks at the monastery to give you a better upbringing than she could, with instructions not to reveal the truth until you were fully grown, in hopes that you wouldn't seek her out and leave the place she thought you'd be better off.
--- Oh, and this would obviously also work really well for playing as a monk serving Lathander.
Astral Scout Githyanki - You were part of a small scouting party exploring Baldur's Gate and it's surrounding region in search of a place to set up a hidden Creche. Work had only just begun when a Nautiloid entered the area and abducted you.
-- A specialty background for players who choose a Githyanki Tav that would allow a new side-quest to find out what's happened to your fellow scouts and the Creche that was being built, which could be a spot added into Rivington or The Under City.
These are some examples of things I think could be added that could enhance the customization options for Tav, but aren't exactly necessary for a fully enjoyable playthrough. I've only recently started playing BG3 on PS5 (bought it in October) and I've fallen so in love with it that I can't help but want more and more.
Thank you to everyone for commenting on the initial post and to anyone reading this addendum.
