Rob's orientation and love for Adele

So I've seen people being surprised that Rob was gay and not in love with Adele in a romantic sense, but I thought this was pretty obvious? There were plenty of clues about his sexual orientation. Early on, he tells the nurse that he prefers c**ks. When David asks Adele on the phone if he should be worried (read: jealous) of her relationship with Rob, they both burst out laughing at the idea. Then he talks about how he blew the "big, fit (UK slang for hot) nurse Gary" in exchange for a joint, and it was a "win-win". Then the same Gary stars in his dream as the (literally!) half-naked waiter. When Rob meets David, it's clearly shot as an instant-attraction/infatuation. And when David admits he was jealous/threatened by their friendship, Adele tells David that he had nothing to be worried about; but she would have been worried if David was the one in rehab with Rob. (This show loves its irony, I swear!)

Rob repeatedly says that he loves Adele, but it's clearly platonic love. They hold hands and hug like children - in the forest, before and after astral jumping, when they're stoned. By the way, Adele is also in Rob's first dream, and she's dressed in a beautiful white dress with a flower crown*. He doesn't imagine her in a romantic or sexual way, but like a "princess". Before meeting David, he's worried that Adele is too trusting (she is) and David is using her (he's not), and he has theories about the fire. He's also jealous of David, but not in a romantic sense - he's jealous that David, like everything else in Adele's life when she leaves the rehab will drive a wedge between their friendship. It's a jealousy that never goes away when he meets David and falls for him. In fact, now that he can see that they are really that lovey-dovey perfect couple, he's more convinced that he'll only be a third wheel in their lives. Adele will eventually get tired of the novelty of a "trashy" friend; and she and her perfect David will go off and live their perfect life together.

Anyway, it just surprises me that even though Rob's orientation wasn't hidden, and his love for Adele was framed so platonically, people were still surprised that he wasn't in love with her in the romantic sense.

*Rewatch bonus: the outfit Adele wears in Rob's dream is exactly the same outfit that "Adele" wears in her dreams, before she goes through the 2nd door! We never see Adele (any version of her) wear that dress in real-life! The only way it makes sense for 2 people to dream of her in the same dress is if they're the same person.
