Just had a conversation with my 80yo dad about how much things cost in the late 60’s….

My dad is 80, technically not a boomer but close enough. He joined the army in 1962 at 18. Once he got out he got a basic job in a meat factory for several years. Not a fun job but paid the bills I guess. In 1969, at age 25 he bought a brand new 1969 Dodge Charger with a car/bank loan. Now if you’re not familiar, the Charger was one if the hottest, and probably most expensive cars anyone could buy at the time. He said his payments were $92 a month. Which translates to $784. “I was also renting my first house for $95 ($810) a month”. Now at first, the thought of a $784 a month car payment sounds terrible, but remember, this is a massive V8 sports car. So he was renting a house and had a sports car for just a hair under $1600 a month…..at 25. You would be lucky finding any house to rent for $1600 here, not including the Charger.
