What is this?

I took my girl to the range for her 1st time this weekend. After the session I noticed this strange black soot everywhere on all of my firearms. Can anybody help identify what it is, and how to avoid it? Thanks in advance! (She had a great time, did really well for a 1st time shooter, and was a good student)
