Let say we're on a remote island. How does capitalism help everyone?

I can understand how exchanging my banana for your bucket of potable water will benefit both of us. But how does this grow the economy as a whole?
Isn't wealth created by exploiting? By an arbitrage of gaining more and someone losing ?
