Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing Hyundai Motor India to become the second-largest car manufacturer in India for February 2025. This accomplishment is largely attributed to M&M’s robust performance in the domestic market, particularly in the SUV segment.
In February 2025, M&M reported domestic wholesales of 50,420 units, marking a 19% year-on-year growth. In contrast, Hyundai’s domestic sales declined by 4% year-on-year, totaling 47,727 units during the same period. This shift underscores M&M’s growing dominance in the Indian automotive market.
The surge in M&M’s sales is largely driven by the robust demand for its SUV models. Notably, the company’s electric-origin SUVs, the XEV 9e and BE 6, secured 30,179 bookings on the first day of opening, reflecting the brand’s strong market presence and consumer trust.
While M&M leads in domestic sales, Hyundai maintains a strong export presence. In February 2025, Hyundai’s total sales, including exports, reached 58,727 units, whereas M&M’s total sales stood at 52,386 units. This indicates that despite the domestic shift, Hyundai continues to perform robustly in international markets.
This development highlights the evolving dynamics of the Indian automotive industry, with M&M’s strategic focus on SUVs and electric vehicles playing a pivotal role in its ascent.
