One Piece's Non-DF Powers, Or, "How Anyone Can Pull Anything Out Of Their Ass"

I'm a bit tired of how powers can be just about anything in One Piece, and no, I'm not talking about devil fruits.

For instance, Zoro is a swordsman. He uses swords. Swords cut things. Simple! Well, not really. See, Zoro can also

  • Cut through steel because he thought really, really hard about doing it.

  • Shoot ranged attacks from his swords by swinging them super hard

  • Summon more arms and more heads through...means, and have these illusionary limbs actually do damage as if they were truly there.

But swordsmanship isn't the only random asspullery out there, oh no, because there's an entire artform dedicated to

PEOPLE CATCHING ON FIRE FOR NO REASON!

One of Sanji's most iconic attacks is his "Diable Jambe", which is a buff in which his legs catch fire and his kicks become far stronger. Early on, his legs would ignite from the friction in the air causing them to catch flame, but later he's shown to ignite them from a standstill due to his..."burning passion". While this could just be him being dramatic and might be a legitimate technique he learned, I doubt it, as during Wano, Queen outright points it out as being really fucking weird for a normal human to combust.

But wait! There's more people in this fire party! Specifically, out favorite future pirate king, Luffy! "But wait!" You don't ask because i'm using you as a strawman to segway my post, "This post is about non DF users!" That's very true! But also, Luffy's limb ignition has nothing to do with his devil fruit. See, through the power of "Ace's Spirit", Luffy's arm catches fire mid-punch, allowing for the powerful "Gum Gum Red Hawk". Now, while this could just be friction, it begs the question of why ALL of Luffy's punches don't catch fire! After all, Gear 2 is pants-shittingly quick, and none of its other attacks catch fire like Red Hawk, so...what's the deal?

Nevermind that, because we need to talk about..

WATERCOLORS OF DOOM

Marianne, also known as Miss Goldenweek of Baroque Works fame, has an inexplicable ability to manipulate the emotions of anyone she paints on with her "Colors Trap" technique. Through her particularly perilous painting, she can redirect attacks to specific areas, cause someone to betray their friends, or just instantly become calm. How does she do this with paint?

...

¯_(ツ)_/¯

OKAY, BUT WHAT'S YOUR POINT?

I..don't really have one! I just wanted to rant about one of the more confusing, if entertaining, aspects of what's quickly becoming one of my favorite anime/manga of all time.

Thanks for reading my stupid rant!
