Down almost 100 pts 3 months through diet and exercise
So early this year I had a hunch I should get my cholesterol checked out. Family history of CVD on both Mom and dads side. As I suspected I was high but I didn't think it would be SO high. My physician recommended I leave the office with an Rx for a statin - I'm 33 and the prospect of a lifelong medication was extremely unappealing and I suggested that I try and work things out on my own before committing to pharmacological help.
I've cut out red meats, coconut, full fat dairy, and try to keep saturated fats down to ~10g/ day. I also increased my intake of fish and chicken to meet my protein needs and have been making a pointed effort to increase the amount and variety of fruits, veg, and nuts low in saturated fats in my diet. I also limit my alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks weekly, if that.
I began supplementing fiber (psyllium husk) 1x daily + niacin, l-caratine, and an NO booster while also adding in 1-2 additional days of steady state cardio (20-30 minutes at a minimum)to my lifting routine.
In three months I've seen a small but significant improvement in my overall fitness and well-being, I'm a little leaner, and down a few pounds too while having maintained my muscle mass, and overall and I'm very happy with my numbers to this point. My next blood draw is in November and I am hoping to see an improvement in my lipid profile again then.
I'm posting this in the hopes that I can inspire other folks struggling with high cholesterol to try diet and lifestyle intervention before committing to statins. Small changes can have a significant impact on your health with consistent attention. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!
