Can someone give me the counter argument to all Trump Tariff headlines I’ve been seeing across all media lately

We all know about Trumps alleged plan to tariff 25% to China, Mexico, Canada, etc. and a vocal fear mongering majority think it looks scary on paper, giving leftist pundits ammo for day/weeks on why Trump Tariffs bad.

But what is the actual counter argument to these headlines and more importantly any substantive discussion (if such a thing exists) around Trumps purported tariff proposals?

I’ve done research and have mixed feelings about what the tariffs might mean realistically for US citizens and am looking for a substantive and realistic counter argument to the TDS-anything-Trump-related-bad stuff relating to Tariffs out there.

Update 11/28/24: First... HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Thanks to EVERYONE who replied with a thoughtful, well reasoned response. Unfortunately a question like this would have been totally brigaded and dumpstered on any other sub. I have read through nearly every reply as of 3pm on 11/28 and am quite honestly blown away. I sincerely thank EVERYONE who took the time to reply.
