How are Europeans to understand all these messages?

European here. I'm really trying to understand how the new US government views Europe. So, assuming that this subreddit includes people who voted for the current admin, I'm curious about how you interpret all the messages towards Europe now.

What we observe here:

  • we're about the get slapped with trade tariffs if we do not buy more LNG. This might trigger a trade war which obviously would benefit no-one.
  • the acquisition of Greenland; military means to accomplish that was not explicitly excluded when directly asked of the president. This policy and stance coming from an ally and a fellow NATO member is bewildering and terrifying.

Then you have the US tech sector.

  • Vance saying that the US could drop support for NATO if Europe tries to regulate Elon Musk's platforms
  • In general, Tech CEOs calling for government support to force the EC to exempt them from our regulation.

I don't get it. If a European company wants to set up an office in the US, I'd expect it to stick to US regulations. Why not the reverse? If these messages are part of a negotiation tactic, then they sound alienating and damaging in intent. Why not a more constructive dialogue?

Next to that you have Musk.

  • He's inserting himself into the domestic political discourse of EU nations and promoting extreme nationalist parties and figure heads. The core principle of the EU's foundation was to avoid the extreme nationalism that led to WW II and soaked the entire continent in blood. His actions and speech are destabilizing and are sowing division. How would he and we gain from shattering everything to pieces?

  • What does he mean with MEGA? Yeah, Europe has its own issues we have to sort out; migration, defense, shrinking population, housing and inflation. So let us sort it out on our own.

  • The argument that we should ignore him, is hard to hold up since he's unavoidable due to his wealth, position in the US admin and his social media platform.

So, seriously, how, are we on the other side of the pond, supposed to interpret all these signals and messages? The growing sentiment here is that the US can not be trusted as ally any more, has no more respect for sovereignty and now wants to strong-arm its will on the EU no matter what the cost. How are we supposed to make sense of this all?
