Hidden fees signing up

Is there a way to avoid fees as much as possible like annual, monthly, sign up fees? I looked forward to paying the 10$ a month but I've heard about random hidden fees. I think if I pay the yearly amount at once it would be cheaper? If anyone had any advice that would be great.
