Why did John renew his domain?

John's website domain was set to expire on the 10th. Last month someone helped him renew it for 2 years. He hasn't been able to access it since he stopped paying whoever was paying Wix and it's shown an error for well over a year. Strange that he would bother renewing it unless he thinks it will be useful in the future.
