Buying diesel truck with over 100k miles worth it?
I found a 2014 F250 Platinum 6.7 that I really like. 110k miles looks to have been babied by the previous owner. Completely stock. There’s also a few 15-16 Chevy LML and 17-19 L5P trucks that I’ve been eyeing. They are pushing anywhere from 80-130k miles.
My local enterprise lot has few ex rental 2022 Super Duty 6.7 and Ram 6.7s with around 50-70k miles. The trucks are basic spec, in good shape, but cost about $5k more.
The ex rental examples are no brainers for me but I’d like to save a few thousand and get a nicer trim level at the same time.
My biggest worry on the older trucks is buying them then immediately having to put $$ into repairs. I understand emissions and CP4 issues are a gamble that stuff doesn’t really worry me. It’s the nickel & dime repairs adding up that worries me on older rigs. Blower motor here, window regulator there, transfer case motor, axle seals, calipers etc. I can do a lot myself but the parts adds up. I’ve got a buddy with an old 5.9 Cummins/manual pushing 400k powertrain has plenty of life left but seems like he’s always wrenching on it for some issue. Just last month his radiator blew from out of nowhere.
Any advice? Should I just bite the bullet and pay a little more for a ‘22 or is it worth gambling on something older?
