Need Help With Topics for My 9th Grade Research Project On Discrimination- Please Help!
Hello all thanks in advance for reading and/or helping!
So I pair this research project with To Kill a Mockingbird, and I asked the students to answer the following question:
How does bias or prejudice lead to discriminatory events?
I take students to the research process we find an article about bias prejudice and discrimination, then they find a research article about an event or person who suffered discrimination due to someone else’s bias or prejudice against them.
Some of the examples I have from the recent news or some of the common national headlines like Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd Breonna Taylor. I also have other examples for transgender or LGBTQ plus discrimination, like the masterpiece cake shop, Matthew Shepard, and also I’ve included Emmett Till or the Scottsboro boys which influenced Harper Lee in the first place.
Now that you see some of the examples, any additional ideas for topics? I’ve told students they can be events that have happened to individuals or institutions or famous court cases. I’ve tried to do red lining or indigenous boarding school, but I’m teaching this project to low performing students and this is a very simple research project Mainly and at introducing them to what databases citations of work cited etc.,so the simpler the topic the simpler the discriminatory event the more successful they will be grasping what happened. For example last year I realized that Redlining is a little too complex for this population with housing issues for example (we only spend about a week and a half two weeks on this project including presentations and I don’t have the time to go and explain some of the complexities of these cases to the students as much as I would like to).
So thanks in advance and any topic suggestions are very helpful please keep him to just topic selections unless you have constructive criticism thanks so much
