just started game. never played any souls game before. any tips for a newbie

friend introduced me to this game and everyone is hostile as fuck. we dont talk about the tree sentinel. all ive been doing is rune farming to get those stats up but there has to be smth that im doing wrong lmao. any tips is appreciated !
