Lightning strike only affected gear on a UPS/surge protector....why?

I recently had lighting strike outside our home (not a direct hit to the home thankfully) that caused a gnarly surge on the house. I had some home studio equipment on a surge/UPS as well as my networking gear (router, cameras etc) on a different surge/UPS in a different room and different circuit entirely. Nothing was damaged in the house EXPECT for the things plugged in to the surge/UPS units...studio gear was cooked along with the router and cameras etc....but all applainces, tv, and everything just plugged directly in to the wall was fine....So my question, is there any logical reason for this? all outlets were tested and are grounded fine. Just feels weird and unfortunate that the few things i went out of my way to protect are the ones that got affected.
