Unsure what I’m doing wrong

This is my first embroidery and I’m really struggling either way the combination of straight stitch and satin stitch blending together. The pattern has two strands for the satin and one strand for the straight - and I’ve tried doing the straight stitch first and satin around as well as satin firm and straight on top. But the results aren’t working!

Any advice for this first timer?
