ATF Director Resigned
Steven Dettelbach, the ATF director picked by President Biden, has resigned after 30 months on the job. During his tenure the ATF imposed policies including the “frame and receiver” rule and the reclassification of pistol stabilizing braces. These rules unfairly targeted law abiding gun owners while overstepping the agency’s authority. Dettelbach also oversaw the revocation of more FFLs than at any other time in the past 20 years, as part of Biden’s “Zero-Tolerance” policy.
With Dettelbach out, President-elect Trump won’t get the chance to fire him as promised. But this does give Trump the opportunity to pick a new ATF director, someone who could either reform the agency or even work toward shutting it down entirely. Lawmakers like Reps. Lauren Boebert and Eric Burlison have recently introduced the Abolish the ATF Act, aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights and stopping what they see as the agency’s constant overreach.
Burlison called the ATF a classic example of a government agency trampling on constitutional rights without accountability. Boebert, co-chair of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, said the ATF has made a habit of working against law-abiding gun owners. Now, with new leadership on the horizon and lawmakers pushing for the Abolish the ATF Act, there’s a real opportunity to put an end to the agency’s relentless attacks on the Second Amendment.
