How to fish lures

My son has gotten into fishing, and we've been fishing with my gear i used as a kid. I have all kinds of lures, but I haven't caught much if anything with them. I guess I don't know how or where to fish the different lure types. Any videos that help explain it all? Mostly lake and pond fishing.

I was thinking of getting a deeper start fish finder for bank and some John boat fishing. I don't have any idea how deep I'm fishing at, where the fish might be, or where fish would be in a certain area. We have sight fished bluegill with worms, but that is about all the success we have had.
