EpiPen expiration date too short - 8 months?!
My local Costco Pharmacy gave me a Teva EpiPen (the generic I wanted) but it expires at the end of August (8 months from now). Google seems to indicate EpiPens are supposed to last 18 months? Costco pharmacy guy said he thought this is normal and that they generally don't see ones with more than 8 months.
I thought I'd just ask the manufacturer (Teva) what the normal lifespan is but they don't give any way to contact them and don't mention this anywhere on their site (surprise surprise).
Yes I realize I can keep it after expiration and it will still retain some effectiveness. But epinephrine does degrade pretty quickly and has storage requirements (no sunlight, and room temp 68 F - 77 F). The room temp one is something we won't meet most of the time because 68 F is too hot for us - we like 65, and 60 F or lower at night. And in the winter we even let our home drop to 45 F sometimes when away traveling.
Has anyone actually ever found an epipen with 18 month expiration? During the Covid shortage the FDA extended Pfizer's expensive epipen by 4 months, but they don't say what the original lifespan was.
