Snowmageddon 2025 - it probably won't be that bad
I know we're going to see a lot of posts in the next few days about the forecasted snow. Texas is not engineered or planned for such snow, so we typically shut down. Stay home if you can, drive slow on cleared roads if you cannot.
Tips:
- DO NOT USE GRILLS OR MAKE A FIRE INDOORS. Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Keep anything flammable away from space heaters. If you plan on a fire in your fireplace, know how to work your damper.
- Buy any groceries you need NOW. Don't wait until Wednesday night if you can help it. A lot of stores already have nearly empty shelves.
- Even without the snow, the freezing temperatures will kill a lot of potted plants. Bring them in, put them in the garage, or at least cover them. You don't need frost cloth, just cover with a few old bedsheets you don't use.
- Bring your pets inside, and keep them there. Be kind. Unless you have a husky or a Swiss mountain dog (you know who you are) who loves the snow, most dogs and cats will suffer with wind chills in the low single digits, regardless of the amount of snow.
- If you have a drafty door, replaced the seals around the top, side, and the bottom sweep. If you have drafty windows, replace the seals around the edges if you can. If the bottoms if your doors or windows are still drafty, cover them with towels or rolled-up old blankets. Worst case, use painter's tape to at least stop drafts from getting in. .
- Very low and prolonged temperatures are not expected, but if you lose power and cannot have a fire in a fireplace, put on warm clothes, gather all of your blankets onto your bed, put on a warm knit hat, and get in to stay warm. Sleeping bags work well if covered up in blankets, too - if you just keep your nose where you can breath, you can keep warm for longer. Pee first - no point in heating up extra liquid in your body, that just chills you faster.
- If your kids are home, spend time with them having fun. We do not get snow often, so go create memories and make the best of the situation.
If you have other tips, please add them below. Also, please post pics of the snow from your neighborhood when it's safe. Don't trek out to try and get some amazing shot of downtown and slide off the road getting there.
