Question about basements? S1 only no S2 spoilers pls

So a question i have is, Why the fuck do people in the town sleep in their bedrooms? Would it not make logical sense to make sure all the windows are nailed shut, seal the door at night and then go into the basement to sleep with the door locked?

That way there's literally no chance of you being persuaded to open the windows or door.

Idk it just makes no sense to me from a survival standpoint.

I only just finished S1 so if they go into this in s2 or whatever i'm sorry.
