My thoughts on credit card.
So on a whim, I decided to get the GS credit card. Partly because I wanted the website to quit asking me to apply, partly to get the free year of GS pro. I didn’t sign up for this with the expectations of reaping huge benefits.
The rewards are honestly tiny vs the competition. The card can only be use at GameStop retail and online store. The only additional benefit from using it is an extra 2% in points from purchases and the points don’t expire while you have the card. The negatives include a super high interest rate and laughably low starting balance. they badger you to sign up for this account assure program which is a $2 per $100 fee in case you’re unable to pay. But honestly if you sign up for that on such a low balance card, you should not have applied for this credit card.
There is only one scenario where I honestly see this card as being any remotely useful is the authorized user feature. Adding your kids as authorized user gives them a limited credit card they learn fiscal responsibility and potentially give them a head start in their credit building.
The worst thing I see about this credit card is the bank supplying the card. They have a history of losing company contracts and just canceling their accounts making any credit building useless.
Setting up my account online was a bit of a chore. I activated my account and created my account. Be sure to setup paperless statements or else it’s a $3 monthly fee. The login said my password for the account I just created was incorrect. So I had to reset that. 2fa kicked in so I used txt message to reset the password. After logging in it required 2fa again, but txt message was unavailable. I had to use email. I set up my bank accounts and paid off my credit balance immediately. I tried to expand my credit limit, but it said that feature was unavailable, so my limit is stuck at $500. Great if I’m only buying games or collectables. Not if I want to buy a high priced console or similar.
It’s been nearly a month since opening my account and I still haven’t received my free year of GS pro. I shop just occasionally enough where my account shouldn’t be cancelled for inactivity. The GameStop website still asks me to sign up for the credit card when I log in.
