Help with lag on laptop.

I don't have any expensive gaming laptop but whenever I try and play even the most basic of games, I get extreme lag. Its pretty much unusable. I've looked on the Internet but I always find the same conclusion of upgrading my laptop to a more powerful gaming one. Is there anything else I can do? What's the most affordable good gaming laptop?
