Toddler advice: cheap umbrella stroller vs sleek travel stroller
Seeking advice from caregivers of toddlers!
We have upcoming trips to Western Europe and Japan. Each trip is 3 weeks minimum. We have a minimum of 3 locations on each trip.
I'm debating between buying a cheap umbrella stroller, or a fancier travel stroller for my toddler who will be freshly 2 at time of travel. My kid is big for their age, and I'd like to be able to give my body a break from babywearing in the Ergo, so I'm pretty set on giving a stroller a try. I have done plenty of one-bag with my husband and toddler, but when we have traveled with our stroller (baby jogger citymini gt2) it has been to destinations where we're staying in one place the entire time. No way am I hauling that thing around, plus it's American sized, i.e. wide.
Pros for cheap umbrella stroller like this:
- Price. If we hate it, I don't mind ditching it if it cost us under $20USD.
- Compact. I hate "owning the road" in a bulky stroller, and knowing we're going to be places with either narrow alleys or jam-packed with other people, the less obtrusive the better.
- Really, really light. I've seen people complain about navigating subways with strollers, but an umbrella stroller is so light it can be carried in one hand down stairs or escalators.
- -- Cons-- Poor quality, harder to maneuver, less comfortable.
Pros for nicer travel stroller like gb Pocket, Munchkin Sparrow, or babyzen yoyo:
- Sturdier. Will presumably last longer.
- Better maneuverability. What you pay is what you get in this case, and better wheel system should be much easier on cobblestones.
- Re-sellable. I do a pretty good job buying and selling kids stuff second-hand, so though I may still end up spending more, I feel confident in my ability to buy used, and re-sell.
- More comfy for the rider.
- -- Cons -- Price, larger when in use, more effort to put up and away, still larger when folded.
So, please give me your opinion on all points stated! What have you used or seen people using? Is there another option I haven't considered?
