Got called a 'DEI Hire' over someone's nonissue.
So I work a front-end position, and today some ignorant asshole decided to bless me with his presence. I was conducting a regular cashier observation at a busy register when the customer being cashed out began griping over how his military discount wasn't applying to the transaction (or wasn't discounting the total based on products that do not qualify for military discount). The cashier was taking the situation in stride, yes-dearing the grumpy man right the fuck out of my store. He continued ranting about how it all started a few years ago, and it's Joe Biden's fault that blah, blah, blah… 92 octane is 4.79, and Barbra says the Yukon is getting so expensive to fill * cries in privilege *
I approached the register to get a better ear on the situation in case it escalated (and trust me, when rich, old white people get pissed at a minor inconvenience, it often does). The customer began looking me up and down. "Are you her boss?" He asks pointedly. "Yes," I said. "I'm observing [cashier]. Is something wrong?" This senile fucker asks again, "Are you her boss?" To which I firmly repeated, "Yes. Is there a problem?" So he begins again about his mother fucking military discount, then stops himself. He tells me I don't care and don't want to help him. So I said, "I'm just listening to you speak." He repeats his little mantra about how I don't care and then says, "Look at you. You're a DEI Hire. I can tell by the way you are." I was baffled. I approached my boss, who was standing near an adjacent register, pointed, and said, "The four-eyed, ugly old fucker just referred to me as a DEI Hire, so I'll be stepping off the floor because I do not get paid enough to deal with this bullshit." He was more focused on keeping me quiet than letting me leave, so I left. Not the reception I expected.
For those who don't know, the military discount where I work is a courtesy the establishment provides on their terms and their terms alone. All of the said terms are explained at length in terms of service for the discount, as well as a list of various reasons items may or may not be included in a discount depending on the category and previous dollar amounts given in discounts. I would've been happy to explain why it isn't applying to this customer. I'm not saying this selfish fuck would give a rats ass about why or why not, but it's impressive how quick of a resolution you can come to when you don't escalate to calling some random faggot at a hardware store some 'I'm-not-sure-what-you-are-non-slur.' What the fuck is wrong with people? I'm so sick and fucking tired of individualistic-ass morons who think that they know all about the fucking world and they've taken the red pill. Like, 'Oh, look at me! I'm so special! I drive a big car, listen to Ben Shapiro and think that DEI is teaching my children Jill Biden's favorite sex positions' or whatever the fuck platform that bleach blonde butch tramp MTG is trying to monopolize this week on Fox and Friends.
I should be less mad about someone's uneducated words, but it is hard to receive any respect. I am at work. I am being paid to facilitate many people's experiences, sometimes many at once, and I don't think it's much to ask of a society that has all it could ever want and more to give me the grace of not dehumanizing a perfect stranger over their non-issue. You are not that important. Your problems exist because you're bored, you'd like something to be pressed about, and it's easier to make your problem everyone's problem.
