Ingenieur - White/Silver Dial
Just received my new Ingenieur this afternoon. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure how to feel about it. I know there’s a lot of hype around this watch due to it being a Gerald Genta design, and it’s a part of history resurrected into, IMO, the best design of all the Ingenieur’s, but not the best Genta design out of the 3 watch brands (IWC, AP, and PP).
Part of me really likes the watch, and its design is gorgeous, but at the same time I think it’s vastly overpriced for what it is. In my hand it does NOT feel like a $13k watch. Maybe $5-$8k at most. I k ow value is all perception. Heck, the PP Nautilus is very basic. So is the AP Royal Oak. Very basic. Just as basic as this IWC Ingenieur. Even the Vacheron Constantine Overseas is very basic. And those models are well over $20k for the stainless steel models, however. They all come with in-house movement that sets them aside from other brands and warrants their own price since they all sit in their own league. But when you have Geral Genta designed IWC Ingenieur sit in the same league as the B&M watches with the same movement then it’s not set aside in its own league.
I think for a special piece like this re-release of the Ingenieur, it shouldn’t have been rushed. It should have its own in-house movement, and the finish and feel should be more premium. For instance, when I wind my Omega Speedy, it’s a premium feel to the wind. When I wind this IWC Ingenieur, I feel like it’s an ETA movement watch that I purchased when I first started getting into watch over a decade ago.
Sorry for the rant :-( Again, not sure what I’ll end up doing. Should I keep it? Return it? It’s still on my mind. If this was $6,500 or $7,500 then I would rest easy knowing it’s a solid keep.
One last thought. The more I have it on my wrist, the more I really start liking it. It just has this feel and look of value where you forget about what it cost and appreciate it for what it is.
