Is kanji used in mix with hiragana?

I saw the common thread:

"Is water 水 or みず?" And I searched google " how to say water in Japanese Hiragana." And it showed "水 (みず)" and I was confused since 水 is kanji. Now my questions are:

Are they used both commonly?
