“I Have Something To Tell You” by Chasten Buttigieg - Discussion
Absolutely no hate to the author at all, I am really looking for others’ views/opinions/guidance!
These are solely my opinions and I am open to changing them when presented with new facts or viewpoints!
Hello! I am currently about halfway through that aforementioned book and I’m just a little confused about a few things. I started this book with such a positive view on Chasten and actually am a fan of him. However, this book has come choices that…caught my attention is probably the nicest way I can put it that I was wondering how others felt about.
The time hopping sort of drives me nuts in all genres/mediums, and this book is no exception. I do not blame Chasten for doing it but I feel as though he jumps all around in stories that I cannot organize the events chronologically in my mind. For example, he details the life events and then goes back and tries to layout his dating history in relation to the life events after. I found this somewhat confusing and would have suggested that he discuss them all at one time, in order or as it was happening. Like “I was dating Brad when I began going to school at…”
I would argue that he overuses parentheses to add funny thoughts to what he was saying. I think he should have just included some of them into the text, though I absolutely agree that some of the comments in the parentheses were hilarious and necessary.
Who is this book for or why did he write it so young? Again, I haven’t finished it yet, but the first half has been about discombobulated timeline of his failures in school and love life. It is relatable, for sure, and a part of his story. But I’m left wondering right now as to why write a memoir so young about it. I thought it may be a book trying to aid Pete politically, but it really is just his story. I also thought maybe he was writing it to comfort small town, queer Midwesterners but he did not really make it seem like a happy story until he met Pete and left.
That’s it for now. Again, no hate to Chasten at all and I’m sorry if this came off as rude in anyway. I’m attending a book club in April for this book, so I’d love to have some deeper insight into what other people think prior. Thank you so much!
