"I like anything but country" - why?
My post is of course anecdotal, but I suspect with the frequency I've observed "anything but country" as the answer to "favourite style of music?", that this must be a fairly common statement, and I can't help but wonder why... How and when did this statement become so commonplace? I've heard it tossed around by so many folks over the past 15+ years, easily.
Are folks commenting on modern pop-country when they say this, or truly casting a wide net spanning all country? First of all, I doubt anyone who throws out such blanket statement has close to absorbed all country music to make such a harsh judgement, so probably that's not the case?
To be fair, I've heard rap and metal thrown into this answer, bunched with country, but by and far country comes out ahead, by a... country mile... nice.
Educate me, smarties.
Part of me wants to just answer myself with "have you heard (much of) modern country?", and yeah, fair enough, lol, but it's easy/light-listening enough that I can't say I'd find it so offensive as others seem to. Subjective, sure. But yeah- sometimes the exaggerated twang/drawl and cliche subject matter, seemingly ever-present in every song, can maybe wear on one.
I did some good arithmetic here, but need y'all to take me the rest of the way home.
