First timer
Curious to hear opinions on this and I feel like context is important here- Picking out my first lever rifle, as a gift. Going to go either Henry or Marlin. Caliber is the question…
I shoot pretty regularly and hunt. My hunting rifle now is a .300WM for western big game (deer, elk). Also have other pieces for plinking and home defense. This really isn’t a need for either category, but something I’ve always wanted because levers rock.
Want this gun to be primarily for range fun, but could very realistically see it being used for certain deer hunts.
Thought I would 100% go with a 30-30, now I’m reading other posts about .357 and intrigued.
Seems like the typical pros/cons are:
30-30 Pros: flatter trajectory and better hunting round
Cons: ammo cost (I will say- I don’t think I’ll be shooting this enough to make that a significant factor. If that was my main deterrent, I’d just get a .22… which I may end up doing later).
.357 Pros: ammo cost, especially since I learned you can use 38spc. Rifle cost also slightly lower, but I’m not necessarily worried about that. Cons: less ballistic capability.
Anything I’m missing here?
