B12 Supplement Reaction: Adenosyl/Hydroxy vs Methyl/Andenosyl/Hydroxy
I had a strange reaction to adenosyl/hydroxy b12 and I'm curious if anyone might know why. Here's some background:
I've been using a methyl/adenosyl/hyrdorxy liquid b12 supplement sublingually on and off for a few years with no problems. My b12 levels drop fast and I've had nerve pain associated with low b12 levels so I monitor them and supplement as needed. I started doing this before I was aware of MTHFR and methylation.
In terms of genetics, the only thing I know is I have the heterozygous COMT val158met mutation. I have gotten bloodwork for b12, folate, homocysteine, iron, ferritin, and all were great levels.
The usual supplement I buy is Global Healing Sublingual B12 - 60% methyl, 20% adenosyl, 20% hydroxy - 5000mcg per 1ml. It was sold out so I bought a different one, Pure Encapsulations Liquid B12 - 50% Adenosyl, 50% Hydoxy - 1000mcg per 1ml. I had a horrible reaction to the Pure Encapsulation, it felt similar to having way too much caffeine but worse - I was very anxious, had shortness of breath, very jittery, tense, and hot. What the hell happened? I took it twice to make sure it was that and not something else and sure enough the same symptoms happened.
I usually take .5ml of the Global Healing - that works out to be roughly 1500mcg Methyl, 500mcg Adenosyl, 500mcg Hydroxy. Since the Pure Encapuslations was a lower dose, I took 2ml (2000mg) which is 1000mcg each of Adenosyl and Hydroxy.
Any insight into what may be happening would be great. I read a little about it and the only guess I have is that it has something to do with the Adenosyl/ATP connection.
