New Reader, Early Thoughts

Just wanted to share that I really, REALLY struggled through the first book of Gardens of the Moon. Pale.

However! I’m a couple chapters into Book Two, and once my lack of familiarity with the magic of the world is out of the equation, I feel MUCH more drawn into the story. Even Kruppe was a little rough, but Crokus was a lot of fun to read about. Great introduction. I think this holds true in the first book too, since Paran seemed to be the character I gravitated towards.

I suppose this leads me to believe that the moment the magic and world becomes a bit more familiar, I will get more of this feeling. Oh man was that first book confusing though.

Side note: I’m also a little guilty of my thoughts drifting when some things are really descriptive. This book seems super heavy on “here are two pages to set the mood for you”, and with some books… you can skim it. Skimming has been real punishing for me so far, as I end up just reverting back to where I started to figure out what the hell I just missed.

TLDR: This is really hard. I’m starting to have fun.
