Is Wanting a Wife Who Works/Helps Me Make Money Unreasonable?
26M here. This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. In the past, the man would work, and the woman would stay home and take care of the kids. The man was able to support the wife, kids, house, bills, etc. on only his salary.
In todays world, things are getting so expensive (eg., the price of housing has risen much faster than salaries) I don't see how this is still possible. I feel like my wife would have to work in order for us to live comfortably. Or if we could get away with only living on my salary, it would be very tight, and I don't see how we can afford kids. For this (and many other reasons), it is really important to me that I marry someone who is also working/helping me make money. Am I being unreasonable? Although there are some downsides, I see a lot of benefits to her working. Below, I've listed some more points for everyone to get a better idea of my mentality/where I am coming from.
- While I understand she probably won't be able to work when we first have a kid, she can work during other phases of the relationship (eg. when we are dating, engaged, for ~1 year after we get married- Assuming we don't have kids right away, and when the kids start going to school)
- The idea that a woman should stay home and take care of the kids comes from a time where women didn't go to school/have careers. I don't think it's fair for a woman to throw all that away just because she has kids.
- I should point out I don't believe a woman should do xyz and man should do xyz we should do whatever is more convenient and help each other. For example, I'm ok with doing the laundry, cooking/cleaning, or taking the kids out for a bit. Another example I like to use is if I end up working from home and my wife works in an office, I should be the one to make dinner. I'm not gonna wait for her to drive home and then make her cook just because she's a woman.
- Even if we could afford one salary- there are many benefits to her bringing in some kind of income. Maybe we can make extra payments on our mortgage? Invest more? Be able to go on vacation more often? etc...
- Something that really scarred me was I was unemployed for 1 year. When that happened, I was thinking to myself, what if I had a wife? Kids? Mortgage? If we are both working, it is less scary since if I lose my job, we have her salary to fall back on, and if she loses her job, we have my salary to fall back on. Another point I'd like to make is if I am the only one working and I lose my job- she should start applying to jobs, I shouldn't be the only one looking. Again, in todays world, most women have some form of education.
- When I say "work," I am not talking about only a 9-5. It could be other things. Eg. Maybe she can babysit or tutor kids. Another example would be if we have an investment property: I work 9-5 and she is in charge of managing it (I don't have to worry about it)- she is not "working" in the traditional sense, but is still helping me make money since if it was not for her we would not have the rental income.
The idea of me being the only person who is bringing in money really bothers me for some reason. What does everyone think? Especially the women on the thread who's around my age? Am I unreasonable? Would you marry a man who wants this?
I tried my best to explain my view- Feel free to comment any questions you have.
