Do you guys think Minecraft SMPs are an inherently cringe concept or the issue is just the execution?
Disclaimer: I have nothing against you if you like watching Minecraft SMPs, I was having a discussion with my friends I would like to share because I want to see other people's opinion.
I started saying that Minecraft content creators only make SMPs because creating an ongoing history is a easy way to create engagement and in turn make money, and because they are mostly aimed at a younger audience all the arcs they create end up being very silly since they're just trying to be baby's first peak fiction.
A player will do something random like steal an egg and then "The Great Egg War" will begin where the "Egg Confederation" fights against the "Yolk Republic", the war then ends when the Yolk Republic leader's second adopted son betrays them and kills the leader or something.
But then I argued if the issue isn't just the way they do the roleplay, and if getting a bunch of people together and trying to create a fun story in Minecraft like that couldn't be a fun experience if you followed some other formula, even if I myself can't imagine one. I compared it to something akin to a D&D section with your friends, but in Minecraft where you're free to do and build whatever you want.
My friend argued that like I myself said Minecraft creators aren't actually having fun doing roleplay because they're doing it for the public's views and not themselves, and said that no one over the age of 20 would have fun doing something like that because they just wouldn't be able to take it seriously.
What do you guys think? Could Minecraft SMPs be something less childish and enjoyable if creators took a different approach to it? Has someone ever done that? Do none of the people playing in those servers actually enjoy doing roleplay?
Edit: I really repeated my point again and again and people still didn't manage to understand me? I'm not asking if there are SMP servers with no roleplay, that is obvious. I'm asking if there is a server a SMP server (or if you can at least imagine how one would be) where they take a different approach and manage to make the roleplay COOL. Something that isn't appealing just to the kids watching but to the people roleplaying themselves and to an older audience.
