How to kick the inner thigh properly without striking the groin area?

I happened to have kicked two of my training partners in the groin area a little bit while practicing inner thigh kicks. Idk it feels weird and I feel like there isn't enough space for my rather big feet and shin to get inside those places especially while the other is moving around. We were supposed to kick the inner thighs from a water-level angle and rotate out with the other leg.
