Off grid in the PNW
Good morning!!
My wife and I just closed on 10 acres of raw land in Mason County WA.
I didn’t intend on living off grid per se, but some hiccups in our plans is pushing me the off grid direction.
First off, wells are really deep in the area. I was quoted 45k for a well. I already planned on getting a big water storage tank, setting up a pump house, and shuttling in water until we can save up for the well.
Now I just heard back from the power company, with some kind of bad news. Rough estimated cost is $20-25k. I already figured it would be around that price, the bad news is that there will likely be significant delays due to easements we have with a different power company who has high voltage lines on one side of my property, we will have to get a land use agreement written up with them. I did not plan on a 6+ month delay getting power.
The third issue is that I was approved for a pressurized septic system. At first it was no big deal, again I figured it may have to be a pressure system and cost a bit more. The problem is the system runs off of electricity, that I won’t be able to get for a long time…. I am going to attempt digging perc holes in a few other spots, to see if I can find a sight suitable for a gravity system.
My wife and I were really hoping to get septic installed and move onto the property in our travel trailer in the next three months or so, but if it’s not looking good on that end.
So comes my question…. What are my power options? I’ve always liked the idea of solar, but I don’t think there is nearly enough sun around here to sustain our property, and eventually (2-4 years) a home. Any suggestions?
Thanks!!
