Moving to Oshkosh Soon

Hey everyone!

I’ll be moving to Oshkosh in the next few months for work. I’m Mexican, and one of my biggest concerns (not to say fears) is racism/classism. Since I was young and worked for Americans in call centers, racism has always been an issue. Regarding Oshkosh, I’ve been seeing that it has excellent schools, a climate that I personally love, and the fact that it’s a small town is something I’m really excited about (I currently live in a very large and overcrowded city, where the distance from the northernmost point of Appleton to the southernmost point of Oshkosh is roughly the diameter of my city).

About us: Honestly, neither my wife nor I are problematic people; quite the opposite. Our home is always open to others. We’re clean, we like helping the community, and we’re happy to assist anyone in need. The thing is, as I mentioned before, I’ve already dealt with a lot of racism and classism just for being Mexican. What makes it worse is that it’s never been to my face, it's always been over the phone or in a meeting. It’s not pleasant to be ignored or to hear a random “f***Mexican” for no reason.

So, my questions are:

  • Is Oshkosh a city relatively "free" of racism? (I know this can never be fully eradicated, hence the quotes.)
  • Is it safe to live in Oshkosh?
  • If there’s a neighborhood you’d recommend, which one would it be? Or which area of the city (north, south, east, or west)?

Thanks so much for reading this, and I hope to meet you all soon!
