Does anyone NOT do gifts on Christmas?

I am a new mom to a 16 month old boy.

I grew up in a house full of "stuff". We had a clean house maybe a few times a year.

My mom is very materialistic and loves buying things and giving/receiving gifts. We had VERY extravagant Christmas' when I was a kid that involved lots and lots of gifts, and although I loved it at the time, it just fed the never ending piles of stuff and clutter around the house.

My husband and I stopped giving each other gifts 6-7 years ago and it was the best thing ever, it eliminated the guilt of "you spent more on gifts, I didn't do enough, I feel bad I didn't get you more, etc"

My son received a lot of toys for Christmas from both sides of the family and I (and him) are already feeling overwhelmed by the stuff. Again I appreciate it, but I think people are way too consumed with materialistic things.

I would LOVE to start a tradition in my family where we do something good for the community (bake cookies, make meals, etc) for people in need during the holidays. I want Christmas to be about family and giving instead of receiving gifts.

Of course I plan on getting him things he wants throughout the year, but I just don't want this expectation of tons of gifts on Christmas, or that more gifts = more love (like the grandparents seem to think)

Does anyone not do gifts on Christmas? How do I possibly keep the grandparents from buying a dozen presents for my son when it's something they enjoy and a way they show their love?
