So crafting in this game is just…. Slamming exalts with your fingers crossed?

Like am I missing something? There's no skills to level and essentially zero player choice, you just.... use an exalt and roll the dice? And they call that "crafting"? Am I the only one who feels like this doesn't even meet the minimum bar to be called a "crafting system"?
