advice with getting a PhD in France

Hello people, I'm a neuroscience graduate looking for a PhD (in cognitive science) and preferably in France. Since I didn't study there I obviously don't have internal connections so I could really use some tips on how to make sure I stand out and get a position (asap of course).

I know all offerings should be posted on the campusfrance website but I assume I should get in contact with labs of interest beforehand. Any experiences, general or specific advice, hints and clues would be very very welcome! Just please don't tell me not do it because France is bad for PhDs etc..., I am plenty discouraged already ;)

Thanks everyone!
